it blasted off the west coast and the u.s. military which monitors the activity of that isolated nation says it looked like an object was placed into orbit. so let's get up-to-date. chris lawrence is at the pentagon. >> we're getting better and new information about that north korean launch. u.s. officials now saying that the satellite that north korea put into space is now in polar orbit. norad has been monitoring it with its space sensors. remember, they tried a rocket launch earlier this year back in april. they did not have much success. this is the first time they have seen all three stages of that rocket launch work and be able to put a satellite into orbit. it sounds very benign, putting a satellite into orbit is not something that you would think of that has military connotations. but the same technology that you use to put a satellite into orbit is really the same kind of technology that you would use to build a long range nuclear missile. >> and the timing appears to have been some kind of surprise to u.s. officials. how worried is the pentagon right now after this launch? >> well,

of how we keep guns out of places that they are not allowed to be in this country, the u.s. congress in 1988 passed something called the undetectable firearms act. it said basically, your gun has to be detectable in an x-ray scanner. it has to have the equivalent x-ray signature of 3.7 ounces of stainless steel, even if you take out the magazine and the stock and the grips. even with those parts taken off, the remaining guts of the gun need to have a substantial metal component. so they will be seen on an x-ray machine. because of that law, we do not have fully plastic guns. that law was first passed in 1988. it was not particularly controversial. the vote in the house on that was 413 to 4. and president ronald reagan signed it. and tyranny was not unleashed upon the land. it is not controversial now that it is illegal to manufacture or sell a gun in the united states that is built to evade detection by standard means. we don't have plastic guns. we banned plastic guns. the ban has been renewed several times since. it is up for renewal again next year. when it comes up for renewal ne

. earlier this week three u.s. senators took issue with that sequence. they fear that american moviegoers will get a dysported impression of the role of torture in our getting bin laden. the first half hour of the movie depicts t s ths the interrogati figure called amare. he appears based on mohammed al qahtani, who was harshly interrogated, although not waterboarded. at gitmo, qahtani was one individual who identified bin laden's courier, a key break in the hunt for bin laden. when we eventually learned the courier's real name and found him, he found bin laden. in real life, one month before september 11th, qahtani was denied admission to the united states when an astute i.n.s. agent named jose perez wouldn't allow him to enter the airport. so qahtani returned to the middle east and was later apprehended fighting with bin laden at tora bora. the 9/11 commission later determined he was to have been the 20th hijacker. part of the evidence? 9/11 ringleader mohamed atta awaited him at the orlando airport. so for me, "zero dark thirty" is a reminder of the power of one person. one week ago to

susan rice, the u.s. ambassador to the united nations, withdrew her name as a possible secretary of state. hillary clinton is going to be leaving in january. she's moving on. she wanted one term and now the chairman of the senate foreign relathions committee, john kerr will be nominated. probably early in the afternoon the president will have a formal announcement asking that the senate confirm john kerry as the secretary of state. the hearings will take place in january. they would very much like to have john kerry in place as the new secretary of state around the time of the inauguration, january 20th, and they would then be able to go forward. for all practical purposes john kerry will certainly carry forward the foreign policy initiatives put forward by hillary clinton. they're on the same page on a lot of these issues but the president of the united states, as you know, carol, he determines u.s. international policy, national security, and john kerry will now have that mission. it opens up the senate seat in the state of maof massachusetts there's already been speculation th
